Grief can occur from:

  • death of a loved one

  • loss of a job

  • end of a relationship

  • or any other change that alters life as you know it

7 Stages of Grief

  1. shock and denial

  2. pain and guilt

  3. anger and bargaining

  4. depression

  5. the upward turn

  6. reconstruction and working through

  7. acceptance and hope

 

What to expect:

Emotional

feeling of being overwhelmed

feeling of guilt or anger

emotional triggers

Physical

disturbed sleep patterns

change in appetite

anxiety

weakened immune system

Social

social withdrawal

decreased productivity at work

loss of interest in usual hobbies/activities

 
 

Coping Strategies

  1. Distraction - absorb your mind into something else, only good for short term to get you through the crisis

  2. Grounding - get out of your head and tune into your body and your environment, notice things around you

  3. Emotional Release - Let it out! It’s okay to cry or scream

  4. Thought Challenge - redirect your negative thoughts, trying to be more logical can help reduce emotion

  5. Self Love - take care of yourself

  6. Access to higher self - connect with others around you

  • You are not alone

  • Love does not end with death

  • Talk about your grief

  • Be tolerant of you physical and psychological limits

  • Eliminate unnecessary stress

  • Be with supportive comforting people

  • Mention the name of the person that died

  • Do what is right for you during the holidays and special days

  • Plan ahead for holiday gatherings

  • Embrace your memories

  • Renew your resources for living
